Busting the myth around ‘do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’

What if it was easy?

What if it was fun?

What if it didn’t feel like work at all?

Yes, I know you’ve heard it before, ‘do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’.

And yes that’s true if you have a job.

If you go to work each day and just get to do what you love. Nothing else.

But …

What if you’re a business owner and the core of what you do, the service you provide is what you totally love to do. Right? You probably wouldn’t be in business if it wasn’t. cos, after all, being in business isn’t easy, huh?

So, let’s presume that your core offering, the service you provide is what you love to do. And you are the business owner. There’s gonna be a whole heap of other tasks that you are responsible for each day that won’t necessarily be, and indeed probably aren’t things you love to do or even like to do for that matter.

The fact remains though that those tasks do need to be done on a regular basis, right?

So what can you do about it?

Well, let’s brainstorm here.

Some possible solutions are that you could:
• Delegate the tasks to a staff member
• Systematise the tasks so the chunks appear smaller and more manageable
• Engage a contractor to do the tasks
• Automate the tasks that can be automated
• Plan some chunks of time to dedicate to completing these tasks
• Hire a part-time or casual staff member to handle the tasks
• Barter your services to compensate for someone to do the tasks
• And the list could go on and on. The possibilities are endless.

What’s the point here?

The truth is sometimes we get stuck in how we do things. And we don’t look outside of the square. We don’t look at the bigger picture. We don’t look at how the ‘having to do these tasks’ is wearing us down and affecting us in other areas of our life and our business.

What can you do about it?

Take a good look at the tasks you perform regularly in your business that you don’t enjoy doing. That are not part of your core business activity. That you do just because there is no one else to do them and they have to be done.

Make a list of those tasks.

Then look over the list asking the question ‘which of these tasks would I love to let go of so I can be free to do what I love?’

And then take whatever actions you can to move in that direction.
