A crash course in patience!
Removing my heels prior to climbing on the stool to retrieve my bag from the top shelf seemed the safest thing to do.
I was on my way out for dinner. All ready to leave home when I realized I wanted to use that bag. Yes, that bag. My favourite going-out bag. I couldn’t reach it from the floor, even with heels on.
Made sense at the time.
Moments later it became not such a wise move!
The emergency room at our local hospital became my destination rather than the intended restaurant.
I’d never broken a bone previously. Turned out I chose to do a pretty decent job of it!
What a blessing this break has turned into as I’ve learned some huge lessons through this experience. I’m learning more each day, I’m not done yet.
Here’s just some of what I’ve learned so far all because of one fleeting moment!
Accepting what happened. I could have beat myself up on this occasion as I historically would have done. I’m grateful I chose not to. Instead I deliberately chose in the moment to look for the silver lining, to view it as an opportunity to stretch myself and learn something new.
Being patient with ME. I’ve always been harder on myself than I ever am on anyone else. After my crash start in this, I’m in the process of becoming more patient with myself. Gotta love the irony and humour here, that the Universe had to choose this way to get me to learn to be patient with me!
Receiving help and support from others. I’ve always been Miss Independent. I’d always find a way to do it myself. What I’m discovering is that my old attitude to receiving help doesn’t really work so well all the time. I’m in the process of giving myself permission to ask for and receive help; and of accepting help and support. Huge thanks to the fabulously kind people who have helped and supported me xoxox.
Being profoundly grateful for small, even infinitesimal, improvements such as doing up my own bra, reducing the number of painkillers required each day, and being able to carry a piece of paper in that hand! Each of those may seem tiny to anyone else and to me they were huge!
The lessons continue and deepen so much so that I feel grateful for the event itself occurring, strange as that may seem!
I remain ever curious to discover what more I can learn and experience.
