Have you ever felt as though your past is following you round?
A huge burden that’s always with you? Its heavy and it weighs you down.
Like a ball and chain attached to your ankle. Or, is yours a giant bag of garbage on your back?
I know I’ve felt like that. And, so do many of the people I speak to each day.
I admit it took me a long time to realise that letting go is the only way for me to be free.
That doesn’t mean I forget it. All the mean things people did to me, all the bullying, harassing, stalking, lying, cheating, gossiping behind my back … all of that and more. It means I choose not to let it affect me anymore. To let it go and move on.
That is a conscious choice I made. No, it wasn’t a once and done thing. I make that choice over and over again and I will continue to do so. Whenever I hear something he’s said about me or I drive past a place where I was badly treated.
Each and every time I choose to let it go and move on so I no longer carry that burden around with me.
(Side note, if he chooses to still be carrying around his desire to hurt me, that’s his problem not mine.)
Truth is you can’t live in the past, nor can you change the past and it really doesn’t serve you well to carry it round with you. Believe me I tried that for a very long time!
We do, however, have choice in each and every moment as to who we are being in that moment and how we plan to be in the future.
