What’s the current shape of your self-love?

by | Business

“If you don’t love yourself, you can’t love anybody else...

And I think as women we really forget that”

Wow. Jennifer Lopez really knows her stuff on this.

The Bible says it like this, “love your neighbour as you love yourself” (Mark 12:31).

I was brought up to that tune.
Treating everyone else really, really well.
I was loving my neighbour.

But, I was not loving me.

Part of that upbringing and biblical teaching tells us that if we focus on us. You focusing on you. Me focusing on me. Well, then we’re being selfish. Egotistical.

Wait. Hold on a minute.

What you’re telling me to do … you’re also telling me I can’t do.
Major contradiction.
So true.
But we don’t think about it. We just go along. With what society tells us. With what our family tells us. With what our peers tell us. Keeping the peace. Keeping everyone happy. Conforming.

Truth is we’re being set up to fail.

Taught we can’t do what we’re supposed to do.

There’s no way we can succeed.

We’re taught to do something and then told not to do it.

What I know, now, is that until we love and accept ourself nothing else works. Nothing.

Without self-love, self-care becomes yet another tick box in an overly busy life.

Without self-love no amount of self-care will fill us up.

Until we’re full of self-love we’ll be constantly giving to others from our fumes.

When we’re full of self-love we’re able to give from our overflow.
Then we’re truly able to love others.
Then we’re truly able to serve and support them as we feel called to.
