Depression in entrepreneurs

by | Business

Truth is, with depression in entrepreneurs almost five times, yes five times, that of the rest of society something’s gotta give.

Could be your health.
Could be your finances.
Could be your relationships.
Could be your family.

Maybe all of the above.

Research shows that while 7% of the population in the USA is depressed, a whopping 33% of entrepreneurs suffer depression. I’m guessing the stats are similar for other western countries as well.

Wow! That really hits home hard, doesn’t it? Especially for those of us who are entrepreneurs, we who are in business.

Seriously, we entrepreneurs, we the business owners, we’re five times more likely to suffer depression than the rest of the population!

Yet…
We’re the ones who are out there doing it our way.
Making our mark in the world.
Standing up for what we believe in.
Putting our necks on the line, day after day, minute after minute.

And one in three of us is depressed.

We show up.
We do the work.

We make out everything is rosy. We have to, right? Otherwise no one will want to use our services.

Yet one in three of us is depressed.

Rather than dwell on the negativity of these facts, lets address here how we can receive support to avoid becoming one of those statistics, or to buoy our spirits if we feel we’re sliding in that direction.

So …
What can we do?
What can I do?
And even more importantly, what can you do?

We’ve all heard that it takes a village. Yet, in our society, we’ve lost our village. Take that one step further for entrepreneurs and we don’t have a village.

What I find when I speak to business owners and entrepreneurs is that most of us don’t know anyone who is like us. Who understands what it’s like to be in business, to be an entrepreneur creating a life and business that truly fits us.

Katy Perry says “I’m every woman. It takes a village to make me who I am.”

If it takes a village to make us who we are, then we as entrepreneurs do ourselves a disservice when we try to do it alone.

We need a village.
We need a community.
We need a close circle of people.

Who get us.
Who will support us.
Who will be our safety net.
Who will buoy us up when we take risks.
Who have our back.

Who will stand for the best in us. Even when we forget, as we often do!

Depression is sometimes described as anger turned inside. What that means is that when we feel depressed it can be because we’re angry with ourself.

Yet, as an entrepreneur, as a business owner, if we’re going to succeed we need to put our best self forward at every moment.
How can we possibly do that if one in three of us is feeling despressed?
Let me tell you that it’s absolutely impossible to do that in isolation.

The truth is that it’s vital for us to have a community to support us.

Community is key to our well-being.
Yours and mine.

Community where you get to truly be you. The good, the bad and the ugly!

Community who love you. No. Matter. What.

What each of us can do to support ourself is to proactively seek out and join a community of like-hearted entrepreneurs and business owners who will be there for us no matter what!

Currently I’m accepting applications from high-achieving women entrepreneurs and business owners to join my conscious community of choice, aka a mightily awesome mastermind. The details are here
