Is anyone home?

Pssst ……………  Is anyone home?

Her eyes look so vacant.

She’s absent from, not present in, her own life.

Going thru the motions.

Doing what’s expected.

Living someone else’s dream.

14-year-old me.  When I found this photo a few days ago I cried.

I have another photo of her as a one-year-old.  It’s a stark contrast to this one.  Her eyes sparkle and twinkle.  Her face is alive with hope.

There’s another photo I have of her as a 3-year-old and there is no sparkle in her eyes, no hope in her face.

Over the past couple of years, thankfully, the sparkle has returned.  There certainly is lots of twinkle and oodles of hope.

The years in between … she was living for other people.  Putting everyone else’s needs first.

Maid-servant, disregarded and disrespected, in her family of origin whilst her little sister was the spoilt princess, able do whatever she wanted and could do no wrong.  Her older brother was exempt from the duties she had to perform as boys didn’t do domestic chores in the 60s and 70s.

When I look into her 14-year-old eyes I realize how much my life was shaped by those formative years.

While I left home and my home town at 16 to forge my own path, I never truly found me till the last few years.

It explains all those years with the predator male who controlled, manipulated and abused me.  Courageously, I called time on that a few years ago.

It explains why my family treats me disrespectfully.   I’ve called time on that recently too.

The past few years have been an incredibly healing journey for which I’m truly grateful.  My past explains and has led me to be the person I am today.

What do you need to call time on to play the lead role in your own life more fully?
