Over the hill and down to the beach ...

“Over the hill and down to the beach
Is the place I go to to refresh myself.
It does my heart good to dwell in such simplicity,
To feast on the simpleness of life.
‘Salt-laiden sea air’, as the saying goes,
Totally refreshing for me I know.”

That’s the beginning stanza of a poem I wrote over 20 years ago.

The years go by.
Things change.
Life changes us.

Yet, the beach and the ocean as a place of refreshment for me are becoming more important, not less, as the years go by.

Somethings remain unchanged.
Too vital a part of us.
A core piece of who we are.

Nowadays I walk 3 minutes down the road and I’m there. A different beach to the one I wrote about.
Yet, just as refreshing.
Just as inspiring.

My daily sojourns to the beach are what keeps me going through everything life throws at me.

I know my beach is waiting for me each time I return home from travelling.

As I drive down the hill towards my home I breathe a sigh that says ‘ah, I’m home’, and I feel peaceful, loved and welcomed.
