The joy is in the journey!

Are you enjoying your journey through life? Or…

Are you going from one instant gratification to another?

What does the future hold for us?

We live in a society today that demands instant gratification. We want it now. Or yesterday!

Everything happens at the click of a button. In the moment.

We’ve come to expect it. Right now!

“We live in a world of instant gratification, the world of the quick fix” – Rachael Taylor

“I think my generation is obsessed with instant gratification. We want everything now, now, now”
Dakota Fanning

I wonder if it’s serving us well?

Are we truly satisfied?

Are we satisfied at all?

It seems to me that our world is just not set up for instant gratification.

We anticipate spring’s arrival. The bulbs flowering in our garden.

We look forward to picking berries and fruits through summer and autumn. Each variety fruiting in its own time. Predictably each year.

The satisfaction derived from the fleeting things of life is not lasting; and our wants remain unfulfilled. – Meher Baba

Instant gratification doesn’t satisfy us as humans.

It doesn’t sustain us. We just want more.

It can even cause greater dissatisfaction.

Why is that?

It’s because we as humans are created to live in a world that requires forethought and planning.

Forethought and planning so we are prepared to enjoy the fruits and berries when they are ripe and ready for us. Ooh, the anticipation of watching them ripen and tasting their juiciness!

Forethought and planning to plant the bulbs so that we can enjoy them flowering in their season. Eagerly watching them emerge from the frozen ground as they prepare to delight us with their fragrance come spring.

“A man’s delight in looking forward to and hoping for some particular satisfaction is a part of the pleasure flowing out of it, enjoyed in advance” – Arthur Schopenhauer

The joy is in the journey.

It’s not about the destination at all.

Instant gratification cannot satisfy or sustain us.

“Life is a journey and it’s about growing and changing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who and what you are” – Kelly McGillis

It’s all about the journey.
The anticipation.
The planning.
The forethought.

Taking action.
One step at a time.
Over and over again.
