When you’re trying to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to no one

When you’re trying to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to no one.

Yeah right.

You have to serve everyone who arrives in your door, right? You have no choice. You can’t send them away thirsty and hungry. After all, that’s why they’ve arrived at my place.

They kept coming. Young. Old. Families. Couples. Students. Individuals. Teenagers.

They all came. They’d always come. It was that kind of place.

And it worked.

For many years, decades in fact, it worked.

Until lots of new places opened up in my town.

And everyone, well it wasn’t really everyone but some days it sure seemed like it, went to try out the new places.

Of course they did. Why wouldn’t they?

Change is always good, right?

When you’re trying to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to no one.

When you market to everyone, you end up marketing to no one.

I’d heard it before.

Somehow though I always thought it applied to everyone else and not to me.

My business was different, or so I believed. I based that on the fact that such a variety of different people frequented it. They always had. I believed they always would.

I thought I was different. I thought my business was different.

How wrong I was. I learned the hard way. In fact, I’ve a history of learning lots of stuff the hard way.
But it doesn’t have to be that way for you …

How bout you?

Are you trying to be all things to all people?

Are you talking to everyone?
