The secret to being better lies in being different
“I think being different,
going against the grain of society
is the greatest thing in the world”
Elijah Wood
Be different and then be better.
When you want to increase revenue in your business. When you want to grow your business. When your business has slowed up a little and you want to get it going again. When a new business opens in your area selling pretty much what you do.
How do you keep your offering fresh while you retain your current clients and attract a boatload of new clients?
The secret lies in innovating your business so that you offer extraordinary value by being different. Different to what anyone else is doing in your industry.
“Being different is good, embrace it”
Simon Cowell
Why do you do that? When you choose to be different, to innovate, to be uniquely you in your business you give your potential clients a choice based on something other than price.
When you offer the same old, same old as everyone else in your industry you compete on price and the new business down the road is able to snag some of your clients simply because they’re new and people are curious to try them out.
Let’s use Dominos as an example here. Dominos built a billion-dollar business quickly in an overcrowded market by offering not just pizza. They offered speed of service and focused on serving hungry college students. That meant they weren’t competing with every other pizza outlet on price alone. They stood out in the pizza marketplace as offering a different and unique service. Dominos chose to be different and then were better as a consequence.
When Starbucks first started they increased the average spend on coffee by around 400% by promising delicious hand-crafted beverages whilst also claiming that’s the secret to making life better. Starbucks chose to be different and then were better as a consequence.
“Being different makes you beautiful”
Nelsan Ellis
Where can you add value in your business to be different?
Truth is every business can, it’s a matter of consistently innovating and looking at how you can add value for your customers.
Here’s my five-step process to help you innovate …
- Choose your specific niche. Dominos chose hungry college students.
- Choose your promise, your unique point of difference. Dominos promised to deliver your pizza in 30 minutes or less, or they’d give it to you for free.
- Decide any changes you need to make to your business so you can deliver consistently on your promise. Dominos chose to locate their stores near college campuses.
- Decide any additional value you’ll add to create choices for your clients. Dominos included different sizes and selections.
- Create your message to clearly communicates your promise and what makes you different to your competitors. Dominos promised affordable fresh hot pizza.
It’s vital that the value you choose to add is perceived as valuable by your ideal clients. Dominos affordability and speed were valuable to college students who were hungry and on a limited income.
