I was that persistent kid.

by | Business

I was that persistent kid.

The pesky, annoyingly persistent kid. Who just keeps on going. Who never gives up.

Tell me I can’t do something. I’ll go find a way to do it anyways.
Tell me it won’t work. I’ll find a way to have it work.

As a kid I was used to it.
I was resilient.
I just kept going.

My imagination constantly dreaming up my next great idea.
Remarkably, I never stopped imagining possibilities.

At some point that all changed.
For many years I restrained my imagination and conceded to being controlled by the norms of society.
I did what was expected.
I behaved according to society’s expectations.
I played by society’s rules.

Till it got too much. I grew tired of people shoulding on me. Of others telling me who to be, how to behave and what to do.

And the rebel in me broke loose once more.

I dreamed new dreams. Adult versions.

History does repeat itself. Again I was told I can’t do it. It won’t work.

Why? Why me? Why do I persist when others would give up?

Cos I’m tired of being told my dream isn’t possible.

I’m tired of being told I can’t do it.

I’m tired of being told it won’t work.

What was different was that as an adult I was not willing to give up because someone told me I couldn’t do it or it wouldn’t work.

Rather than hop away and come up with a new idea, I refined my idea and kept on going.

Why? Why me? Why do I persist when others would give up?

Cos I’m tired of people shoulding on others.

I’m here to support women be courageous so they can withstand the shoulda, coulda, wouldas that come their way every day.

Why?

Cos I believe it’s time for us as women to live lives that fit us and our kids regardless of what anyone else tells us.
