Are you wasting money on your marketing and advertising?

So many of the business owners I work with are wasting money constantly on their marketing and advertising. You see, we’ve been sold a myth.  And that myth is that we just have to put our name out there repeatedly.  Over and over again.  Spending lots and lots of our money. 

And then the myth continues to tell us that they will then come to us when they want or need what we sell.  So it’s all about building a brand, putting our name out, coming up with a clever jingle and some pretty pictures. 

This theory works for big business where they have gazillions of money to spend on advertising.  And, of course, big businesses have few competitors.  After you’ve heard ‘things go better with Coke’ you’re gonna remember it whether you want to or not!

But, does it work for small businesses?  Absolutely and categorically  NO.  It does not work for small businesses.

How could it?  Small business owners don’t have gazillions or even millions to spend on marketing and advertising.  And they have lots of competitors. 

If you’re reading this, you are probably a small business owner and so my question to you is:

Does your current marketing make your business money?

“I’m so annoyed.  I’ve put tonnes of money into this business and I’m just not seeing the return.  I don’t know what else to do and I don’t know how long I can keep going for.”

Liz* was upset and angry.  She literally had invested tens of thousands of her hard-earned cash into her business.  And, despite working hard and long hours, she was not making the money she needed to from her business. <span “font-size:8.0pt;font-family:=”” “arial”,”sans-serif””=””>(*not her real name)

She had spent a lot of money on her website and on advertising.  And nothing changed, no matter what she did.  She really was getting desperate when we met up with her.  Liz was unsure how long she could keep the doors open for, yet she had invested so much money that just walking away wasn’t a great option for her either.

We did a Marketing Assessment on her marketing and advertising.  She scored only 1.4 out of a possible 5.  No wonder her marketing and advertising wasn’t making her any money!  You see, if your marketing and advertising scores under 3 it can’t possibly make you any money.  It needs to score 3.5 – 4 out of 5 to be paying for itself and making your business money.

We started working with Liz, made some changes in her business including to her marketing and advertising and …. a short time later Liz was happy, relaxed and making money in her business.
